Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': WS_TABSTOP

If you’re planning to build from the ground up a Win32 window without using the wizard, and would like to use TAB to move from a control to another one you need to add WS_TABSTOP style to all of your controls (at least ones you want moving on). But there is also something you need to do: add a call to IsDialogMessage to your event loop.

That’s all folks.

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': /bin/install: Permission denied (Vista)

I’m going to talk about something which is probably already fixed, but for any who doesn’t want to install msys again and is encountering a problem during an installation command (/bin/install) under Vista, here comes the trick!

Download the following files into your bin folder (for example: c:\msys\1.0\bin): install.exe.manifest and install-info.exe.manifest.

Then, within a msys terminal type: touch /bin/install.exe /bin/install-info.exe

You can proceed with your install

This is probably my last blogpost written on Einstein, my IBM ThinkPad R51 laptop, for at least a month. He has been serving me well for the last two years. Today, two days before the expiration of two years long warranty period, the display just died and does not turn on any more, Nothing helps, not even plugging it to the power to lighten it up, the underlight of the display is probably gone.

Fortunatelly the external display output is still working so I’m doing backups of all of my data (thanks to the lcd display of my sister’s pc) and tomorrow I will take Einstein to the local IBM distributor for repairs.

Why now!?! Its damn bad timing and Tycho(main pc) is 150km far from here!

This article is written in czech because it is meant for czech visitors of gimp.cz website.

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Begging for candies

This is just a quote about: Stop begging for candies or you will …

Each midday we buy food and each friday we get free candies! And each friday a colleague is begging for our candies, I have no problem with that but today another colleague got a sooo goooooood idea! He has trapped a candy! How? He powdered the candy with salt Then he put the candy on his desk and let it there until …

During the afternoon, our colleague saw the candy! He took it and once he had it in his mouth, he felt that there was a problem

We all laughed like kids for this awesome joke.

Sorry dude, but it was sooo gooood!

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': Why using X is (such?) a bad habit

As some of you may know, I am a C-Unix (among others subjects) teacher assistant at my current school (EPITECH). When students come to defend their project, one of the reason of loosing point is to not check the return value of system call inside their code (-2 points each time one syscall’s return value is not checked).

As a result, some students has come of what they think to be a great idea (or I’ve been told so): the X functions. I’m going to pick the worst case of utilisation of this: xmalloc.

void	*xmalloc(size_t size)
{
  void	*buff;

  buff = malloc(size);
  if (buff == NULL)
    {
//EDIT: this is bad
//      fprintf(stderr, "not enough memory\n");
//EDIT: kind of better
        write(1, "not enough memory\n", 18);
      exit(1);
    }
  return (buff);
}

Well, in this implementation I’ve been kind enough to print an error message before exiting, some students doesn’t bored to do this much.

So, what is the problem of using this alternative to malloc? It’s pretty obvious if you’re asking me. I’m going to give a couple of examples:

  First:

Let’s imagine that an application like Firefox rely on this kind of function (and I hope it doesn’t). Would you be glad if, you’ve been using your browser since several hours, having open several tabs and upon trying to open a new one boum ! “not enough memory” and Firefox exit. All your search lost… forever.

My point is that an application should never exit like that if she can still continue to work or manager its currents state. For example you should still be able to read your current tabs. But what if another error occurs ? Well one of the option is to allocate ressources to display error message at the beginning of the application to minize the case where you will not even be able to warn the user about the occurring problem.

But let switch to my second point:

This one is surely more cynicale. Take the case of an Operating system. Imagine that it can not found enough resources to start a task and just shutdown. Will that make you happy? I guess I don’t need to said anymore to prove this case .

So, please:

Check you syscall’s return values

Don’t quit upon failure if you can still manage to go on with your current state

Warn the user about the problem and give him the choise about what to do (going on or quit, etc).

I’ve got something more to tell about this xmalloc things, but I’ll keep it for another time. I’ve got to keep an eye on my students tonight .

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Nautilus Actions - Rendering SVGs on right click

I used the same set of scripts to render a bunch of SVGs since I am in the icon bussiness…until now! Those original scripts were easily customisable but had to be copied to the active directory every time I wanted to render some icons. On Saturday, Ulisse introduced a really nice Nautilus action for rendering SVG files and now I have the rendering action right below my finger!

All you need is librsvg-binary and zenity. Then just select any SVG and choose “rsvg2png” (”Render SVG” in my case). I will still keep my scripts, they are handy if I want to render recursively everything in subdirectories, but this new action is really usefull. Go and check it out yourself!

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Windows Vista

Few weeks ago I’ve installed Windows Vista 64bits (the business one) …

I’m a bit affraid about the 64bits thing, because the quest of finding compatible drivers, softwares and so on should be really awefull. And not, Vista found everything for me plus all 32bits softwares from XP or Vista 32bits work like a charm (at least those I usually use ).

I’m enjoying everything on it, from the UI to the UAC. Ok, I can’t use my dual screen like I did on XP with nVidia drivers (I’m talking about spanning), and UltraMon is not ready yet, but everything seems to be sooooo cooooollll !! Ok, there are 32bits and 64bits processes running twice to serve one or other but ok, it’s only a matter of time to have all softwares running in 64bits, right ? So, the huge amount of memory that all of these are using will disappear in a few …

Unfortunately, the dream is stopping into a succession of BSOD. Hey guys, I’ve not started coding yet ! What’s the hell ? After lots of investigations, antivirus scan and so on … Is Vista going crazy ?

Disappointed, I install it once again but this time I try the 32bits version. And guess what ?? A heavy noise is coming from my brand new hard drive (ok, it’s 1 year old …), oh my god ! I stop the installation, restart it on another hard drive, and everything goes well.

This time, everything is faster than on the previous installation. Crossin’ fingers …

Hi every one !

I promised them a little while ago, here are the pictures of our journey in the states. And as an apology, I uploaded old pictures from old trips : Berlin, Brussels and Greece.

I still have few pics from my more recent adventure in Munchen, but I don't have the pictures available yet.

This summer, we won't go abroad because with Marine, we are currently moving out so we won't have the money to travel relatively far. Instead, we'll take two weeks to travel in the south of France and drop the tent wherever we wanna stop. We'll start with some canyoning in the Gorge du Verdon, one of the most beautiful french canyon, then we'll probably stop in the alps to hike. Then, we'll probably go diving on the coast, visit few provencial places..
Nothing's planned, actually, the plan is NO PLAN !

See you around ..

It is hell of a challenge to re-create all 193 stock icons for GTK+ toolkit, but I am joining the quest to do it!

And you, yes You my dear reader, if you have artistic skills and had ever have a thought about joining Tango or GNOME projects, this would be a good time to join and help with this icon drawing marathon. (So we can make it all in one day and go home to our beloved wifes and girlfriends right at the friday evening )

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': New web hosting

Hey,

it’s done: I’ve switched to a new web hosting. I think I miss-upgraded the wordpress db (yes I used the upgrade.php script !) but seems like some columns are missing : I can’t have the links section back on my sidebar! It’s not really important since I think I will do a fresh install a day

I’m planning to move the projects area to pages into wordpress but I need to find out a roxy theme

Update: I’ve changed to this theme because the other one was using features I don’t want anymore (gallery2 embedding, widgets, …).

Update2: If someone knows how to remove the margin of these smileys got ! I didn’t succeeded to remove it !

Update3: Thanks to Nico, the margin is now fixed HAPPY !

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': Weather…

Hi,

Now that I’ve started to work as grown up do (5 days a week 9 to 9), I understand a bit better their frustration about the weather. You see, all this week, we have been gratified by a blue and shinny sky in Paris. So I decided that it was time to start doing some roller-skating again and planned to do it on Saturday as my way to whsmith to buy a few English books to read.

Unfortunately, when I went out today it was windy and cold, all that was missing was the snow. Well, if it was snowing a few days before spring, it will be a bit hum… weird anyway . Fortunately for me, it didn’t rain at all.

On my way to the Rivoli road, I came across a woman or a man wearing a shinny yellow dress (couldn’t see if it was a woman because of it) and an Egyptian mask. This person where on a little stool, and was as fixed as the queen’s guards. I took a little picture with my cellphone before leaving 1 euro behind. I regret I still haven’t bought a slim camera to catch moment like that, the quality of my cellphone is really poor (but the cellphone is kinda old too ).

Well, I stop there. My life isn’t that interesting though . I’ll come again later, when is the question.

Ja !

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Beautifying Gnome control center (Tango friday 16.2.2007)

Evolution of Network proxy icon

For this tango friday, I took a quest on finding better metaphor for network proxy applet in gnome control center. This is the story how the metaphor evolved and where it ended

If you look over the Internet, the “internet proxy” or “network proxy” in images and schemes usually use a wall or a general computer/server metaphor. It is good when the proxy has also a firewall inside or when it is in the scheme and has a description.

Not a good metaphor The next was a series of “Just another globe”(TM) styled icons, one inspired by Apple’s icon or network configuration and the last one inspired by the icon used in Tango icon theme for the same purpose.

Then some brain damage happened to me and this icon appeared After Jimmac’s suggestion, the wire on the right side was added.

Based on these, the final icon was created Added some colours, line enhancements etc… et voila! Icon created, packed (renamed as gnome-network-preferences as Dobey suggested and sent to bugzilla)

Update 17. 02. 2007: I’ve just beaten another c-c bug, the icon for sound applet

Sound preferences icon

Now the icon waits for GO/NO-GO result

Hi every one,

A little word about me (hey, that's my blog !) and some new pictures.

Well Marine and I are back from the alpes where we had a wonderful time riding the slopes on our snowboards. Greens, blues, reds, blacks everything was amazing since it was snowing. This might sounds weird but this is my opinion. I prefer to have a bad visibility with fresh snow, than ice with a blue sky ... So there, we had two sunny days with a fresh but thin snow. Then, followed three snowy days in the clouds, and finally a sunny day with a lot of fresh powder.

For a last time before we come back from australia, this was awesome !

PS: we take off to Washington DC on friday, so new pics and posts in 2 weeks.

A few days after official announcement but rather later than never! The new release of Inkscape with number 0.45 is out and it has really nice new features. There are already packages for all major systems created so grab yours and test it Good job is done by developers and packagers!

I would like to thank to all translators for their work on this release, you did a hell good job! (and I screwed only a few of translations you sent (my deepest apologies Alexandre) Keep up good work for the 0.45.1 and next releases too!

p.s. Yes, I am sick these days, high temperatures and back pain knocked me to the bed and I start to feel like an instantaneous tea cooler.

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Win32 API: SetCapture()

As I said in my previous post, I had to talk about SetCapture() function.

To start, I need to explain what SetCapture does. This function sets the mouse capture to the specified window belonging to the current thread. (cf. copy / paste from msdn). What does it mean ? It means that all mouse events will be sent to a specific window.

Now that we all know what SetCapture does, I have to explain the need. I have to implement in Aoof-Wm the framework, on which Toy’d is based, a XGrabPointer like. But what is XGrabPointer doing ? Exactly the same as SetCapture. So what was the problem with SetCapture is what you’re wondering, isn’t it ? We need another tip !

On unix / GNU/Linux, you can move a window by pressing alt and clicking anywhere on the window and then dragging it. It’s particularly useful when you don’t want to waste some time to move the mouse to the titlebar and then drag it. Ok, now I can explain the problem

For a standalone application there would be no problem, but for a window manager there will. On the Aoof-Wm implementation of a window manager, we use the unix like system which consists of a process which is in charge of frames around each application. So the frame does not belong to the same process of the window application. It means that you can’t do a SetCapture on the frame and then receive all events of the mouse because there is another window just on top of the frame … That’s the problem. So I decided to re-implement a quick SetCapture / XGrabPointer-like on Windows which does everything I need. The first version is really ugly but works. And I’m currently writing the new version which will be better, at least I guess

So the next post will be about the last implementation I made as a replacement of SetCapture. Stay tuned !

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Sloppy focus on Windows

Today, I’ve discussed with Barratis about sloppy focus. What is sloppy focus ? Sloppy focus stands for focus follow mouse.

For those still there I’ve looked for SystemParametersInfo into msdn, after a minute I found it, so here is the source code to activate the sloppy focus under Windows.

SystemParametersInfo(SPI_SETACTIVEWINDOWTRACKING, 0, (PVOID)TRUE, 0);     SystemParametersInfo(SPI_SETACTIVEWNDTRKTIMEOUT, 0, (PVOID)100, 0);     SystemParametersInfo(SPI_SETACTIVEWNDTRKZORDER, 0, (PVOID)FALSE, 0);

In next posts I will talk about the function SetCapture and problem I encountered with it.

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Meld icon - Tango Fridays’ stuff

The Friday of 12th January was not officially marked as the “Tango Friday” but there was one request on the tango-artists mailing list that attracted my attention. Steven Garrity sent there a request for an icon for Meld application. Meld describes itself as visual diff and merge tool and judging from screenshots, it looks really like a helpful application for developers. To be honest, at the first moment I wanted to make an icon of Vulcan mind meld process but that is not much following GNOME HIG, so I did “only” a tangoified version of the current logo in their SVN (thanks go also to Lapo Calamandrei and other Tango artists for comments).

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Some news to begin year 2007

Lately I had less then a little time to blog about things that happened. Now it is not different tho. Actually, I am working on one website for a client and development of two another sites is going to start soon. Not speaking about other office jobs. So there are no new illustrations or paintings I can post probably until the end of February; I only can swear that I practise and hopefully I will post some updates of Oscar and his Friends at that time.

Gajim 0.11 - New default icon theme

Among the news I would like the world to know are, on the first place, new icons and logo for GAJIM Jabber client. Thanks to all of you who encouraged me to finish the set and also to developers for their support and that they included it as a new default set. The set is based on the logo proposal I posted some time ago and contains updated icons for other jabber transports and a new set of emoticons in two sizes too. If you want to see it in action, go and grab and test the new version!

Listed on graphics planet

I just want to say Hi to the graphicsplanet.org because I did not say it when I started to be syndicated there. So, Hello planet!

Inkscape 0.45 - 3, 2, 1, hunt!

Inkscape is also one of tasks that keep me a bit busy these days. The new version’s freeze stage is nearing, bugs are being hunted and reviewed, and with luck also solved, so we need everyone’s hand! If you have some time and skills, please help us to sort out and review bugs, we want to hit 300 points before the strings’ freeze. (I’ve got 6 points already )

Actual screenshot

Actual screenshot reflects my actual mood (if anyone knows author of the image I used, tell me, I will give him a credit!). Other parts of the desktop are using Gillouche theme for GTK and for Metacity too. You can see asome icons of a new theme for Gajim there too.

P.S. I’ve got a new battery for my IBM R51 Laptop! 9 cells, 74000mAh, 4:45 hours of working time!

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': Happy New Year !

And so here we are ! Goodbye 2006, Welcome 2007. The year has run very fast from my point of view, perhaps a little too fast . Anyway, I hope this new year will bring to all of you what you’re are looking for and that mankind will acheive better things than before. May it be a year of happiness.

Below this post, you will find the lyrics of a song from the Blackmore’s night which I really appreciate (both lyrics and music) and which fit my thoughts for this new year.

Where has the time gone...it seems to fly so fast
One moment you're having fun, the next its come to pass
Days turn into yesteryear, old friends find their own way
Until the moment you leave...I wish that you would stay...

So here's to you, all our friends, surely we will meet again
Don't stay away too long this time
We'll raise a glass, maybe two
And we'll be thinkng of you
Until our paths cross again...maybe next time...

Let's laugh at the memories, and talk all afternoon
Let's remember the moments that leave us all too soon
We'll smile at the pictures still lingering in our minds
When you're reminiscing, then all you need is time...

Tracing faded photographs, a scrapbooks lonely charm
Pressed flowers and dreams we had, our fingerprint on time
The 1st moment we ever met, when your eyes met mine...
I remember the summers of Dandelion Wine

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Merry Christmas ( not too late :) ) and Happy new year !

Lots of news !

It’s been a while since my last post … I know I always start with something like that

No internet connection at home

I’ve just moved to a new flat and I don’t have internet yet. It’s really hard

Some work on the AoofWm Gfx

The GfxMgr doesn’t update the whole scene each frame anymore. I’ve added the capability of updating only a region of the scene, it means that you can invalidate a rectangular region of a scene and the GfxMgr will walk through all GfxObjects to find out those covering this region. It’s not perfect yet, there is some problems (really small) due to inner scenes. I’ve planned to fix it ASAP.

New design of the WM is being implemented

Barratis and I are working really hard to get a working Window Manager on time. We have already defined all interfaces and we’re implementing them. We hope this new design will solve all problems we’ve got with previouses …

Time to get back home with no internet connection

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': Makefile

Hi,

Sorry, I can of forgot to write about this as I did promise ^^'’. So here I am to catch up with it.

So why Makefile ? In fact it’s quite simple. For those of you who know me a little or who are following this blog (fools :p), it’s not a mystery that I am a teacher assistant at my school. Thus, I am lead up to correct the first years projects. The problem is, that the grading is quite strict. If they don’t provide a correct Makefile they’re going to have a 0 mark no matter how much theirs project are.

And usually, Makefile are not correct. By correct I doesn’t mean that it doesn’t compile and produce the expected binary, but that whenever you type “make”, the program will be relinked even if no changes have been made to the source code! Rha, this really pissed me off (perhaps because I used to compile software on old computer a while ago and I know how frustrating it is to have to compile again for silly missing semicolon).

Of course, we are still looking at theirs projects to point out errors to them so they don’t loose their time, but still. It’s a shame that they keep making the same error after have been explained why theirs Makefile wasn’t correct. So, I took some of my time to make a little lesson about how should a Makefile be strucutred (at least at school).

Since it is aimed to the first year students, I made the lesson in french, so I’ll just give the URL here sorry . But anyway, it is not very interested I didn’t covered a lot of the possibility of make, the online gnu manual do this job just well . Ok, enough talk here is the link. And don’t forget, it’s not a reference and it is in french!

Cya, kisses and merry christmas

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': Sigc++-2.0

Hello,

It took me some time, but as promise here comes my little speech on sigc++2.0 . A few post ago, I mentionned how sigc++ made me loose a little time in my dev. Now it’s time to explain why, so people going through the same error will loose a litte more time.

We were one more time trying to find the perfect design for our Window Manager API. Rno, who is a fan of .NET, proposed to make the addition of handler on event in the same way as the MS framework : by using the += operator.

So I took a few minutes to dive into the sigc++’s headers to find the template relevant for our case, and I found it. We had to use this one :

template <class T_return, class T_obj, class T_arg1,class T_arg2,class T_arg3,class T_arg4>
class bound_mem_functor4  : public mem_functor4<t_return , T_obj, T_arg1,T_arg2,T_arg3,T_arg4>

And of course the signal to be used along this functor is the following one :

template <class T_return, class T_arg1,class T_arg2,class T_arg3,class T_arg4, class T_accumulator=nil>
class signal4 : public signal_base

Until there no problem. I made two typedef for saving the trouble that always come when you’re using template (that is the ugly template<params …>) :

typedef sigc::signal4<return , arg1, arg2, arg3, arg4> SignalEvent;
typedef sigc::bound_mem_functor4<return , classtype, arg1, arg2, arg3, arg4> SignalEventFunctor;

And finally I made the operator so we can use them à la .NET :

inline SignalEvent& operator+=(SignalEvent& sig, SignalEventFunctor func)
{
sig.connect(func);
return (sig);
}

Well, this was quite easy, the problem didn’t come from there. But wait, I’m coming to it ! It’s not a += operator for nothing, we made possible to stack more than one handler on a perticular event so they’ll be called one after the other by sigc++. But, here it comes, we also wanted to be able to stop sigc++ to call the rest of the handlers if one return false (or true I don’t remember :p).

Looking into the tutorial-style documentation of sigc++ I found something about Marshallers which let us do exactly what we wanted. At least it should have let us. It wasn’t possible to compile. So I went looking on google for a solution. And there after a little search in the vast knowlege base of internet I found in the changelog of sigc++ that Marshallers has been removed from sigc++ when they switch to the 2.0 to be replaced by Accumulators ! Damned it ! I should I’ve been more carefull and notice that the last parameter of the signal4 template was class T_accumulator=nil.

So I googled again to find something about accumulator to finally found how to use them. An accumulator is simply a class which defined at least two public component:

A template () operator:

a typedef of the return type of the above operator

Here is the Accumulator I made to achieve my needs:

class   CSignalEventManager
{
public:
    typedef bool    result_type;

public:
    template<typename IteratorT>
    result_type operator()(IteratorT First, IteratorT Last)
    {
        result_type bRet = true;

        while (First != Last)
        {
            if (!(bRet = *First))
                break;
            ++First;
        }
                return (bRet);
    }
};

Now that I’m thinking about it, the two parameters should have been references to avoid unneeded copy . Well anyway it’s working. I still wonder why the sigc++ documentation hasn’t been updated. I found several reports of this problem on their list though.

Well, perhaps this post will help someone with the same problem, anyway until the sigc++ documentation is updated it will be a reminder for me :p.

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Playing with DWM API - Part 1

I took this morning to play with the brand new DWM API :). And you know what ? It’s really easy !

You can retrieve a live preview of any window and play with it. Here is a screenshot of a little application I made to learn DWM API. The application plays with existing windows preview on an ellipse. Each time you roll the mouse wheel the focused window change.

I’ve played with only 4 functions:

DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea

DwmRegisterThumbnail

DwmUnregisterThumbnail

DwmUpdateThumbnailProperties

I will share the source code of this little application as soon as it’s finished.

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': Skin again

Hi,

I just fixed the skin, so now it’s working on both IE6 and FF 1.5.0.8 (yep I still didn’t switch to the 2.0 on my desktop). It’s just frustrating that you cannot expect the same behaviour of the majors web browser regarding CSS interpretation in the end… I guess that I’m going to keep IE6 around a while before switching to the newer (and better) version, since I don’t think every company has already authorized the migration .

Well, See ya, I’ve got few posts to make soon:

One about sigc++ (I already told about it)

And one about Makefile (Why ? Well, you’ll see).

I’ll make them later on, I’m going to start writing a little documentation for Toy’d. Check out the lastest news on the website by the way !

See you later.

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': Skins

Hi,

As you might have notice (especially if you are using IE) I’ve made some change to the skin I’ve adopted:

I change the available wallpaper

I add a little preview of each available wallpaper when the mouse getover the link in the header

I’ve made the header to be in a fixed position so you’ll always be able to see it and change the background

As for the preview thumbmail, I didn’t finish it yet, I’ll do it later, it’s working enough like that right now . The little problem is for the fixed header. I used a IE6 patch to make the css “position: fixed” work under IE6 (IE7 is supposed to interpret it correctly), but the problem reside in the fact that my first news appear immediatly below the header, and thus is a little unreadable. I didn’t found how to correct this at the moment and since I don’t have an IE to test I can not do much about it. So I’m going to disable the fixed header for the moment .

I’ll try to fix that next week anyway, I’ll keep you informed !

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Tango Friday - November 3rd

Yesterday, it was a wonderfull Tango friday! Lots of people came to #tango and danced around icons with us. I would like to shout glory to all knights who participated on this quest and created new icons for applications reported bellow Sir Andreas’ blogpost. We all together fought like lions and enjoyed the whole day.

You can see all new icons we created yesterday at special Tango Fridays’ page. Now these icons are going to be sent to relevant people who care about packages/applications and we can only hope they will be accepted

At the end, a nice suggestion has been made by hbons, to make Tango friday each first friday of the month. As he trully said, it would speed up things rapidly

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': X11 Substructure*Mask

EDIT: I was certainly wrong about the mix of the Substructure mask, I simply didn’t select it on the good window, mea culpa ^^'’.

Well,

Here a little news concernig Toy’d. I’ve been working on the miminal window manager that’ll be shipped with the Aoof-Wm framework. And since almost 2 hours I’ve been wondering why if I was selecting the evtDestroyNotify event of Aoof-Wm I won’t receive the evtMapRequest event anymore and windows will just popup on screen without the WM having a word to say.

Well the answer was that it doesn’t seem like you can mix the SubstructureNotifyMask with the SubstructureRequestMask. And if you do so (as my x11 implementation of Aoof-Wm was doing), the Notify take precedence (this isn’t logic if you ask me). Fortunately, I don’t need to receive evtCreateNotify event to code the window manager. But still, to have lost 2 hours for this little trick piss me of

And worst, with StructureNotifyMask I’m not receiving any notification event… I’m going to look into this.

Next time, I’ll talk about Sigc++ which made me loose a little time too a couple of days ago.

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Joining the quest - let fuzzy icons go away!

Andreas started that, Jimmac joined and declared war on fuzzyness too, and it looks like there will be a huge amount of work to do with all those fuzzy icons so, I am the another knight in this quest! For a start, I have already done two icons that I wanted to give some Tango love to, Labyrinth (mind mapping tool, and Gajim (Jabber client). Both are sent to developers now, but feel free to comment them.

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': New Skin !

Hey !

I thought it was time to change a little the skin of my blog, so I went to pick one on wordpress.org and here it is. I would like to thanks the author, he made a really good job with this design. You’ll find the theme here.

However, I’ll make some little modification. I will add a little preview on the wallpaper selection and of course change the wallpapers . Oh, but time is going on, I’ve got a lesson to give.

Cya.

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Blur effect (Update)

Hello,

Now, I’ve managed to do the blur effect in Hardware using DirectX and an effect file. I’ve done the blur effect with 2 pixel shader functions, one for blurring in x and another one for blurring in y. I’ve got better result by doing it like this (with 2 functions) than doing it like I was doing in my software blur algorithm.

During my learning of: “How does pixel shader work ?”, I’ve found a cool software to help building effect file: FXComposer. It’s easier to build effects with it because you have directly the result on whatsoever object you want and you can debug directly on it.

Now, it’s time to take some rest because a heavy week is coming.

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': Blur effect

Hello,

I’m working on a cool effect for Toy’d: Blurring content behind the window frames. I’m doing everything in software for now, and I think I will do the blurring effect in hardware with DirectX as soon as I will learn how pixel shaders works.

I would like to thank my cousin Franck for the quick explanation of a basic blur algorithm.

And famous Vista buttons with glow effect in action:

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': ISS Alpha a kometa SWAN nad vaší hlavou

Měla by mít magnitudu přibližně -0.7.

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': The ISS Alpha and the comet SWAN above you on the sky!

There is an extraordinary chance to observe two interesting objects on autumn sky this week. Since the early night hours is the SWAN comet observable (this comet has raised its magnitude to 4,7 in past few days) between constellations of Hercules and Corona Borealis With clear sky, the comet is observable by a naked eye as misty cloud below cca 30˚ above the horizon (see the map at astronomie.cz). We were watching it after the astronomy lesson yesterday and I can confirm that it is brighter than last week. And if that was an nice experience for several next years, it was even better and stronger experience yesterday

The second bright object on early night sky which can be observer with naked eye is the international space station ISS Alpha. While the comet is observable until its dawn around the midnight, the ISS is observable only for a few minutes and then it disappears behind the shadow of our planet (it moves by the speed of 8km/s and the flight around the planet takes 90 minutes). You will be able to see it on the background of starry sky as a bright moving point flying from the west to east-north-east. Which constellations it will pass depends only on your position above/below the predicted track. Yesterday, the ISS appeared over observatory in Ostrava at 19:15 and the only thing I missed to be absolutely happy were binoculars to zoom in.

If you want to watch ISS too, I recommend you http://www.heavens-above.com site, where you can get actual data and predictions for future passes. The only thing you have to do is to set in what(or near of what) city you are and weekly prediction is yours . ISS usually passes from west through the Hercules, Cygnus and Andromeda to Triangle constellation (this week in Central Europe).

Besides ISS also passes of another satellites can be predicted, e.g. communication satellites Iridium which flashes the light down to the earth when they are in proper position to sun. It then looks like there was a moving star that raises and reduces its brightness in short time and then disappears totally. Yesterday we observed three but only one was predicted by heavens-above.com.

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': AoofWm.GFX

Some news about AoofWm, the framework on which Toy’d is build.

The GFX part in AoofWm is really important because the GFX is in charge of all renderings: themes, widgets and so on. As you may know, Toy’d has to run under several OS such as Windows and GNU/Linux. W and I work on the GFX.

We have decided to design the GFX has a scene manager, where all widgets are canvas. The GFX also provides some primitives such as Rectangle (filled or not), Ellipses (filled or not) and so on.

We have also decided to give to the GFX the capabability of loading / unloading engines at runtime. But what is an engine ? An engine is a graphical library which provides everything needed to draw primitives (as above) and load images (at least famous types such as jpg, png (png are so damn cool !). I guess you’re thinking: “Yep, ok, it’s cool but why are you doing that ?” Ok, There are lots of graphical libraries (such as Cairo, GDI+, Imlib2, X11 (yes !), …) and there is something else: DirectX, OpenGL. And here we are ! Imagine eye-candies effects you can do if the engine loaded is a DirectX engine !!!!! There is nothing like that for now, but as soon as a first release of Toy’d will be out of the box, why not …

What else ? The GFX is also able to catch events for a specific window. So it can receive a mouse move, a mouse click, a keyboard event or anything else. I’m not satisfied by the way AoofWm handles messages so far, and I’m thinking about something else, I will post about that because it’s not only for the GFX, it’s for all events in general.

Now you know pretty much everything about the GFX. I can give you some news about it. I’m working on it for 2 weeks to correct bugs and memory leaks (thanks W :D) and now I can tell you that the GFX is really working like a charm and handle now 3 engines under Windows, one being runnable under Unix / GNU/Linux. I’ve made a screencast of a useless program done enterily with AoofWm: From the window creation to the event management and the drawing now ! Click >here to download the screencast in avi format.

That’s all for now.

The other day, we weren't doing anything with Marine, so we decided to re-discover this famous city named Paris.

Through the world it's known under many names : Paris the wonderful, Paris the romantic, Paris the fashion city.

It's a cultural center, but i won't give an historical lecture there, I'll will just give you this overview of the most famous monuments gathered here in this magically beautiful country.

We did this sightseeing tour of Paris in two hours, during sunset, which gives this nice light on the pics.

I am back in the astronomy world After a year, an astronomy course takes place on Hvězdárna a planetárium Johana Palisy in Ostrava again. And this time I will finish it succesfully, I promise!

For the beginning, I’ve created two astronomy related wallpapers, one is a bit modified photography of Cassiopea constellation(with a nice story which I will write about after some time) and the second one is digitally drawn illustration of a comet and a star in the Milky way. I hope someone will enjoy these wallpapers as well as I enjoy astronomy lessons

Update: one new comet done to test how does tutorials from deviantart.com about creation of planet work in GIMP

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Relaxation during the work

How do graphicians relax during the work time? They draw something else than what they have to! Just like I did near the end of work time yesterday. I had to finish 16×16 px icon of airport but had no inspiration. With some consultation with good people of Tango project, two Tango styled animals’ icons were then created The monkey was started for Lapo’s “insert-object” icon and the cow was for Jimmac to show him that the monkey really does not look like a cow Btw, Lapo refined the monkey then to really realistic looking chimp, that guy(and also others from Tango) rocks!

p.s. icons are release under GNU/GPL licence. SVG for them is available in the same place as they are located. You can modify them as much as you want only if you do not hurt any animals. Find those SVGs if you want them

Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': The “Pool”

Hi,

I’m striking again ! Well, about Toy’d I’ll make a post to speak about it later. For now, just let me explain you what is the “Pool”.
The “Pool” is a period in the life of the first year students of my school ({EPITECH.}) during which they’ll have to learn how to code using the C language. They’ve got a little less than a month to do so. During this period, they’ll also learn how to use a unix-like OS (in our case NetBSD, I’ll not argue on this choice for now ).

Every year, everything is going just fine before the third day… This is when they’ll learn what is a pointer, and it’s like a huge fog has suddenly rise from nowhere : They are LOST !
So, as a teacher assistant, it’s my job to help them understand this marvelous world (the one with segfault and bus error ). Even if I’ve been in their case, it’s still amazing to see how complicated the sentence “A pointer is a variable containing an address. So to access the content pointed by the pointer, you only need to déréférencer [sorry, don’t have the english translation] your pointer”. Trust me, in french it seems like a whole bunch of non-sense for them .

Anyway, even If I’m working 15hours a day, it’s funny to be with these young people eager to learn, it’s like being 18 again

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Utility to generate O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L gallery on MS Windows

As you probably noticed(if you have viewed some of my photos), I use jimmac’s O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L for my web gallery. The one big disadvantage of this gallery was that it did not have any utility for generation of directory and file structure for MS Windows operating system. Yeah, you can say that I use mainly GNU/Linux so I do not have to take this as such a big disadvantage, but sometimes I have to use MS Windows on my laptop, so that is why.

Well, after an hour and half of reading python manual, asking Geon and HanzZ about image library and one string conversion problem, here it is! A python script called ofr.py that converts images in its directory and creates directory and files’ structure for the webgallery.

Usage is simple, you need Python with PIL and a directory of images. After succesfull installation of both, python and PIL, copy the ofr.py to the directory with images and run it. It will create directory structure which you will then upload to the “galleries” directory of O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L on your server. Of course before upload you have to change /webgallery/info.txt file with description about photos and if you want, you can also edit description of single photos in /webgallery/comments/ directory.

So what to say at the end? I hope this script will help somebody and also that I will make it to be real GUI frontend for O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L gallery generation

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': YsInfinity logo and button

For a last week or so, I had a chance to have some influence to development of YsInfinity launcher application deveolped by Arnaud Vallat. The application is still in early stage of development (the version number is 0.01) but this does not mean that it is highly unstable and unusable, the oposite is the truth.

What does it have that it differs from other applications’ launchers? Well, on the first sight it can look as any MacOS X like looking launchers/docks(this one is not a dock) but there are some differences. Main advantages/difference I see in

grouping of similar applications into individual groups. You can have several groups around your screen and open only those you need = space saver.

Another one is low resources’ use, it has even more quick responses than my favourite RK Launcher.

The third advantage and difference is keyboard navigation. You can use your keyboard to navigate through group of items if you do not have a mouse with scroll wheel which is usually used to choose the launcher when you have mouse.

And the last, it looks good You can watch some videos about special effects it has on its project page. How it can now look you can see on the screenshot below.

Of course this, let’s say, alpha version has some serious bugs/annoyances sometimes. Those the most important I see are:

It does not run on Linux(yet )

It does not even run on every Windows machine(the solution of this is yet unknown because the reason is also unknown.)

An application is launched by clicking the group’s name or the red button. This is probably not a disadvantage in some cases but if you do not have YsInfinity allways on top and want to raise it above some windows by moving your mouse over it. But it sometimes does not raise and you click it(I’ve launched VideoLanClient 7times because of this )

It lacks Drag’n'Drop support, for now, so you have to add launchers manually in the shortcuts editor. (It is planned for future versions)

On the other hand, after solving some serious problem and segfaults in even earlier stage, it did not segfault on me yet, probably I am lucky guy

Why did I wrote all this? I think that this piece of software will grow into a nice application, and to speed up this, all possible suggestions and bug reports are important for author of it. So the more users test it the more soon developer can focus on adding new features and solving really important bugs. And the second reason is that the icon of YsInfinity and the red button are my work

Vallat Arnaud 'Rno': YsInfinity

It’s been a while since my last post. (it seems I’m saying that on each post, no ? :)).

Anyway !! I’m still looking for new enhancement for Microsoft Windows desktop. And I heard lots of things about Apple dock like for Windows or any other applications launcher. So, I’ve started my own applications launcher. It’s not another Apple dock like, it’s a new way to organize your favorites applications and launch them.

Along with this project, I also made a brand new website to present all the project on which I’m working on. It’s not enterily filled yet, but it’s coming.
Stop talking, just jump >here

Update: I’m so stupid, I forgot to talk about an important thing, the red button and the logo of YsInfinity have been done by Cornelius. Thank you again dude for all your work !

Vybíral Josef 'Cornelius': Two faces

One face is telephone, second face is 2MPix camera! Based on Andreas Nilsson’s icon of his new W800i, I’ve created a Tango icon for Sony Ericsson K750i cellular phone that I bought because of not-working keyboard of my old and still shiny SE T630. I am still tweaking the equipment of the phone but one I can say now, FM tuner is perfect thing and Opera mini is absolutelly cool browser for it!
Laventure Kenfe-Mickael 'Barratis': …

Hi,

I’m not in a very good mood since yesterday… Just when I was thinking of uploading my finished work on Aoof-Wm (I finished to remade it entirely, in fact I’ve done 110%), I found that my laptop wasn’t willing to boot from my hard drive, this one isn’t detected anymore >_ .

I kind of loose my confidence in computer science since yesterday night, even if I know it’s my fault not to have made a backup of my precious data… I should have upload everything on the svn even if this was going to break all the working application (new api, and so on). *sigh*

I’ve going to try to use the rack of a friend tomorrow, I hope to be able to get back Aoof-Wm in an advance state, or I would have loose 2 months of work… If this the case, I would have better went more often outsibe instead of coding -_-
